One of my favorite streets in Den Haag is Het Lange Voorhout, because of all the trees and old buildings. The one I like most is this one, at number 6, it’s called the Pagehuis.

The building at the Lange Voorhout 6 has been built around 1610 to household the master which casted cannons here. In 1621 the next door gatehouse was built which connected the residence to the cannon foundry in the Kloosterkerk, in the 18th and 19th century the building was used as a home and school for squires (in Dutch; pages) in training which would end up working for prince Willem IV, V and King Willem I and II. That’s how this building got its name; the Pagehuis.

The Dutch government was the official owner and constructer of the residence back in the days. The two story building has a facade in Renaissance style on the front of the building, which has partially withstand time. Two reliefs with the faces of the god of war Mars and his female counterpart reference to the original function of the residence.

Nowadays you can rent rooms in the building for business meetings, private diners or parties ☆.
