Oh yeah, it’s time for a cold and cool tradition: the New Years Dive at Scheveningen! On the first of January get your hangover ass to the beach for a fresh start of the new year. You wouldn’t be alone, 10.000 people will run into the water at 12:00h sharp.
History
Did you know that this is a very old tradition? This year the 57st dive takes place in Scheveningen, a few times the dive was cancelled because of the freezing cold temperatures.
The first dive ever was in Zandvoort by a small group of friends. The first dive in Scheveningen was in 1965 and is the biggest dive by now. This year there will be 140 dives, not only in the Netherlands, but also overseas. To name a few: Australia, Dubai, Curacao, Brasil will all be diving, 41.000 people will dive into the water to celebrate the new year.
Unox
In 1998 Unox started as a sponsor for the dive in Scheveningen and during the years they made the event even bigger. When they started in 1998, there were only 6.000 participants in Scheveningen, now 10.000 and the 41.000 overseas. Unox sponsors the oversea dives as well, with the bright orange flags, caps and ewrtensoep. Imagine, in tropical destinations like Aruba for example, they have sun, palmtrees, white sand and… a Unox cap and the soup, funny right?

Advice
A little advice (yes I did dive last year and I used to work for Unox):
1. Bring your warmest clothes EVER, even though it’s 10 graden. Thank me later.
2. Head towards the beach by bike, tram or foot. You’re probably still drunk, so you can’t drive anyway.
3. Be in time! Yes, you have to buy a ticket to enter the beach and do the dive. The beach will be ‘open’ at 10:30h.
4. Dress for the occasion, it’s like carnaval in the water!
5. Smile and wave, especially girls. Press will be EVERYWHERE and each year De Telegraaf chooses the ‘Unox meisje’, you will be on the frontpage of the newspaper. Check out the list with the latest Unox meisjes here.
6. Shoes, bring a pair of flip-flops to the beach, the sand will be cold as ice.
Are you ready to dive? Make sure to post your dive pictures with #denhaagtogo & of course #nieuwjaarsduik!
