I’m always a bit sceptic when it comes to food at train stations. It feels like fast, not that fresh food. But hey, since I’m at the station every day (I work in Amsterdam), it would be nice to have some dinner options.
A few months ago the Grand Central Food Market opened at the first floor of Den Haag Central Station: 3 restaurants under one roof. Last week I checked out this food concept.
First of all there is Pickles, our beloved and wellknown burger boys.
Second is Bellota, they serve you wines, ham and different types of sausages. Hola!
And last but not least Fishbar Saltzer, a vintage (a.k.a. hipster) looking fish restaurant. I decided to check out this new kid in town with my vegetarian friend.
Fish or no fish?
I was a bit stupid bringing my vegetarian friend to a place that serves burgers, meat platters and fish.
All of it? Yes, at the Food Market you can order from all the 3 restaurants at the same table. It doesn’t matter where you sit, if you want something from Pickles, but I prefer fish from Saltzer, you can order it and they will serve you the food all at once, on one bill. Super smart!
Codfish, hake or prawns
Saltzers menu has many options, but seafood it is! What about King Crab legs, 1⁄2 lobster with mayonaise or oysters? Fancy something less fancy? Try their fish and chips.
How does this work:
1. Pick your batter: beer battered, salt & vinegar or tempura & oriental seasoning.
2. Pick your fish: hake, codfish, prawns or mix.
I picked the mix fish with beer, salt & vinegar batter, served with sauce Remoulade, green peas, coleslaw and homemade mayo (oh my, so good). I loved it! Uber fresh and delicious. The prawn was the best in my opinion.
You are probably wondering what happened to my sweet vegetarian friend. Well, after she saw the menu, she couldn’t resist the fish and chips either. She asked the waiter (compliments for him btw, he’s made for the job) a few questions about the fish. He was patient and took the time to tell her all about it.
Going to Amsterdam every day is -thanks to Saltzer- not so bad after all!
