This week I joined the Local Heroes Food Press Tour in town. Together with 25 enthusiastic bloggers we visited 8 local food heroes. Let me tell you about one of them: Hermit – Dutch coastal gin. Oh yes baby, it’s time for some GT-love.
Gin is hip and happening, it’s the drink of 2015. Hermit is an initiative by Willy Mooren, a very passionate guy who told us all about his gin. He wanted to make his own gin at the beginning of 2015, so he just did and… it’s a hit!
First of all, he told us about the bottle itself. A hermit is a sea creature, born without a shell. “The little animal wanders the beaches to find a home. Crawling across the North Sea floor he ended up on the Dutch shores. Finally, he finds his shelter, an empty bottle. The bottle became the symbol for Hermit’s home everywhere”.
Then we got the change to taste the gin (insert happy dance)! This gin is flavored with a variety of citrus peels, juniper, coriander seeds, eight botanicals and a drop of Dutch seawater. Willy added Fever Tree tonic water, some bright orange grapefruit zestsome and green samphire grass, which made the drink really photogenic. The taste is surprisingly fresh, a bit fruity and it has a saline finish. I like it!
He also let us taste a sample of gin tonic ice cream (seriously, this is one of the best flavors I’ve tasted in months, oh my!!).
So, if you still need to buy someone a Christmas gift, this is it people. For now, lets drink some more!
