About

Everybody from The Hague knows the song Oh Oh Den Haag by Klein Orkest (Harry Klorkestein):

“Ik zou bes’ nog wel een keertje,
net as vroegâh,
een nachie willen stappe.
Op m’n Puch een wijffie hale,
en daarna danse in de Marathon.”

Oh… De Marathon, its an institute! It all started with the Ooms family, at the end of the forties, they opened a rollerskate course at the end of the Savornin Lohmanlaan in The Hague. Bands like De Golden Earring performed many, many times at this venue. Years went by and in 1965 it became a pop music temple with a cool reputation.

In 1972 De Marathon moved to the Wijndealersweg. Bands and rock music dominated the place, but this all changed around 1978. From this point on De Marathon became a true disco trendsetter. De Golden Earring, Q65, Motions, Scarlets, Tee-Set, Shocking Blue: they all performed at the venue. De Marathon was on top of its game for many, many years.

In the nineties owner Frans Winterswijk sadly ended the Marathon era. After this De Marathon became het Dance Parliament, Intenz and later the “O”. I had a few fun school parties at the place during the “O” period (yes, they involved hangovers). Later it became Celebration Studio’s and Fantasy Dance Theater. In 2006 the place went bankrupt and it became the target of squatters.

Nowadays Ad Hoc manages the building and it looks so sad, it has lost all its glory. The building will be demolished to create space for the International School next to it…

A tribute
Generations enjoyed De Marathon and have great memories of it. On the 17th of April 2016 there will be one final party, at the Marathons parking lot. A tribute to all the many good parties and memories, organized by the (by now even a bit famous) former bouncer Ben Manuputty. He was a Marathon bouncer for 6 years and wants the place to go out with a BIG bang. There will be performances, you can see old pictures of De Marathon, meet old friends and dance your ass off, for old times sake.

Don’t miss it! R.I.P. Marathon.
