I love fish, and I blame my dad for my love for ‘kibbeling’. As a little girl we used to go to the Haagse Mark on Saturdays and when finished shopping we always enjoyed some fish at Simonis (to be honest, it was the highlight of the whole trip). Simonis is very big in Den Haag, this family company started in 1880 by Albert Simonis with a small shop and café at Westeinde in the city center. At that time the only thing they sold was smoked eel. Alberts sun Allie starts selling fish in 1935 at the Haagse Markt, and in 1976 the store at Markthof opens. Nowadays all these stores are still open, including a few new ones all over town and a big fancy restaurant, at the harbour in Scheveningen, Catch. Like I said, I love their kibbeling, but make sure to try other things as well, it’s all fishyfine!
